Comments:
This appears to be looking south at Greig Street foot bridge which was built in 1882. If so where is the suspension road bridge. It was there from 1855 to at least 1959 when it was closed.

Any thoughts on where the smoking chimney is? Possibly Kingsmill, where hotel by same name now is.
This was I believe originally water powered but may have been converted to steam. Or what about Hilton Hospital if it was there at this time.

Since my last comment on this picture I have realised that it has been reproduced as a mirror image of the actual scene.Perhaps the original negative was placed wrong side up on the developer. It is looking north at greig street bridge not south. The two church towers shown on the left river bank should be on the right. The chimney could be at the elictricity power station which was beside the old swimming pool.

This picture has clearly been developed as a mirror image of the original as the noteable spires are on the opposite sides of the river than they are in actuality. The reason there's no suspension road bridge is because the photographer was standing on it looking north.

I suspect the chimey was situated somewhere near the old swimming baths.
