Surely there's lots of 'artistic license' in this picture? I've never heard of a bridge at that point on the river.

Looking at the Bridge structure, my guess is this was a temporary Bridge possibly while the main Bridge was being built / upgraded , to the left of the bridge.

Yes indeed it was the temporary bridge put in place while the beautiful old suspension bridge was being dismantled and replaced by what I've always known as the "New Bridge" (probably more appropriately referred to as the Ness Bridge".
This temporary bridge was in place when I moved to Inverness in 1961.

Interesting picture, especially the non-vandalised east bank architecture! As a child, I remember this bridge in use prior to the demolition of the old Ness Bridge. I'm pretty sure that, for a period, it took westbound traffic only. We always knew it as 'the temporary bridge'.

This is the "temporary" bridge which was in situ just prior to the start of WW2. I believe it was placed to facilitate the construction of a replacement for the old suspension bridge. However, war intervened, and the replacement project had to be abandoned.
