Comments:
From my memory the High Street did not look signiicantly different in the early 60's. The first major change I remember in the town was at the photographers rear in this picture. The large Georgian terraces below the castle in Bridge Street were torn down (Charles Edward Stuart spent the night in one before Culloden) and the present day monstrosity was built.

I remember as a little girl my father telling me stories of using the TALKING STONE or FREE SPEECH STONE which was outside the Town House (still is I believe) you could stand on this and voice your opinion on anything and as long as you were standing on it, no Police Officer could grab you, but when you stepped off it you would have to MAKE A RUN FOR IT!!!!!!.......does my memory as a child ring any bells. Oh by the way my father was called Leslie Williamson

When I was at school in Inverness, Woolworths (left background) was rebuilt and had an up only escalator installed - probably around 1963. I would always walk to the bus station via Woolworths just to try the escalator. Innocent satisfaction.

Around the time of Queen Elizabeth II's coronation there were stacks of donated pennies arranged around the perimeter of this square. The reason was unknown to me... still trussed into my pushchair.
